Research area
Dr. Fritz Treiber
Fritz Treiber studied microbiology at the University of Graz and molecular biology at the Medical University of Graz. After completing his doctorate, he worked for a year as a research associate at the Center for Technology, Work and Culture at Graz University of Technology before moving into the private sector.
He has been working at the 7th Faculty since 2008. In his role, he developed science communication formats such as Botany Brunch, Brain Game, and Science & Cinema. In addition, in 2012 he co-founded the Taste Lab at the University of Graz together with Univ.-Prof. Dr Helmut Jungwirth.

Research focus
In 2016, Fritz Treiber became the University of Graz coordinator for the degree programme Nutrition, Health and Consumption. He teaches a wide range of courses in both the bachelor’s and master’s programmes and is actively involved in developing the new curriculum. He also serves as a contact person for students with study-related questions and is responsible for the recognition of courses.
Fritz Treiber’s current research focus is in microbiology (antibiotic resistance, antibiotic residues, and their effects). In his science communication research, he explores creative communication formats and their potential to reach different target groups. In the Science & Cinema format, societal issues are highlighted through scenes from films, followed by discussions in which a scientist relates the scenarios to the current state of research in the field. Treiber examines whether this combination of entertainment and science can engage different audiences (for example in climate research) and what they can take away from it. Building on the same format, he also conducts interdisciplinary research (communication studies & religious studies) on images of the devil as well as depictions of rock music and black metal in various films.
