Imperium Romanum: The Roman Army ‒ Power Factor and Cultural Carrier in the Ancient Mediterranean
Without its perfectly organized military apparatus, Rome would never have been able to build a world empire. The power of all Roman emperors was based on their soldiers. This course presents the phenomenon of the Roman army in detail: from the beginnings of the legions, through their development, to the reasons for their success.
The focus is not only on great military history but also on the life of individual soldiers:
What tasks did a legionary have?
How did he live, fight, and suffer?
How much could he earn, and how far did he travel the world?
The everyday life of the Roman legionaries
In addition to the military aspects, you will also learn about the cultural, economic, and social achievements that the Roman army brought to the provinces. These include the spread of the Latin language, technological innovations, architecture, dining and bathing culture, as well as values that continue to have an impact today.
Interactive Element
Participants will not only learn about the everyday life of a legionary through lectures but can also slip into his role themselves: a Roman armor with chain mail, body armor, helmet, greaves, sword (gladius), shield, and much more can be tried out.
